A Small Engines Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of small construction equipment. This job requires the candidate to execute their expertise in inspecting repairing and refurbishing of all types of equipment. Perform Inspect, diagnose, maintain, service, repair, and overhaul a variety of small equipment such as demo saws, pumps, generator, tampers, striping machines, paving equipment and equipment in a safe, efficient, quality minded and customer focused manner. Perform maintenance and repair on equipment to manufacturer’s guidelines to maintain the safety and reliability of the unit.

Duties, Skills, and Responsibilities:

  • All employees are required to work safely and report any injury immediately
  • Inspect, diagnose, maintain, service, repair, and overhaul a variety of small equipment such as demo saws, pumps, generator, tampers, striping machines, paving equipment
  • Ability to read and interpret equipment manuals
  • Knowledge of two (2) and four (4) cycle engines
  • Regularly inspect equipment condition, perform preventative maintenance, and check equipment for appropriate performance
  • Prepare work orders and estimates of time and determine parts needed; requisition needed parts and materials
  • Ability to perform emergency repairs
  • Conduct tests on equipment to diagnose any malfunction
  • Study equipment having frequent breakdowns to determine cause; attempt to prevent future occurrences
  • Operate hand and power shop tools to perform repairs and/or fabricate machine parts or equipment; may do acetylene and electric welding, brazing or cutting of machine parts, or tempering and sharpening of tools
  • Maintain all hand and power tools in safe and efficient operating condition
  • May service more complex equipment in conjunction with training
  • Train employees in proper operation, safety and service of equipment
  • As with all team members, will be responsible for shop area maintenance, safety and cleanliness
  • Perform related work as required and assigned


  • Technical training or 3 years related experience
  • Current and valid commercial driver’s license (Class A or B) a plus
  • DOT Certification a plus
  • Ability to work between the hours of 5:00am to 3:00pm
  • Ability to work overtime
  • Possess own hand tools up to 1.5”, air tools, miscellaneous tooling needed to perform job, and a lockable tool box
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, supervisors, managers and customers
  • Ability to produce quality work
  • Ability to work during evenings, weekends, or irregular hours will be required based on schedule
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
  • Must be able to provide legal right to work in the U.S. as BBAC participates in E-Verify
  • Must be able to pass a drug test
  • Bilingual is a plus
  • Basic mathematical skills

Physical Abilities:

  • Ability to lift 50 (+ -) pounds or be able to ask for assistance
  • Ability to twist, turn and bend continuously
  • Ability to push, pull and carry objects
  • Ability to shovel using hands, arms and back to complete task
  • Ability to carry small to large tools in and around jobsite
  • Ability to stand and kneel for long periods of time (majority of the time walking, standing, or kneeling)
  • Ability to perform small detailed tasks

Work environment:

  • Exposed to moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles such as dust, dirt, fumes, etc
  • Ability to work in an external environment and under many weather conditions such as frigid cold, and exposure to vibration and/or loud noise
  • Employer will provide appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as needed, but will be the responsibility of the employee to dress appropriately for the weather conditions
  • Will primarily be working in an enclosed mechanical shop
